Upcoming

I decided to keep track of reader requests, and some of my own ideas for future articles on this page here. I keep losing track of stuff that users have said will be useful to them. The persons who requested an article, and the requests can be found in the list on this page.

You can send your own requests to carthik@ubuntu.com. No guarantee that I will take it onto myself to write what you want but I certainly will try to accomodate requests that are not just support requests.

Ideas for Future Articles

  1. Martin – Where to put foo/bar ?

I downloaded and installed Realplayer and the latest Thunderbird; but I didn’t know where to put them. Not wanting to mess anything up I decided to play safe and put them in my home directory, but now I wish I hadn’t because it feels a bit untidy – An explanation of the layout of the linux filesystem /usr, /sys, /var etc, and what it’s all for?

  2. BEG – Printer cups (ipp) setup for roamers

The question I would ask is how the **** would I set up a (cups?) connection to a printer over a real network, not a usb/parallel printer port. Scenario: I drag my laptop with me to work, and use an extra IP address we’ve got here, but I can’t reach our printer.

  3. Chuck – Equivalents for common Windows commands/settings etc

a translation guide – stuff like how to do convert ‘move *.mp3 subdir/*.mp3′ or ‘copy *.mp3 *.foo’ or ‘dir /s foobar.conf’

Also, what is the Ubuntu equivalent of the Path statement in windows, and how does one set it?

I know ‘.conf’ is a typical ending of signifigance in Linux, but what other ones are there (my Windows examples would be .ini .bat .log .pif .exe (I know that extensions in Linux are not functional, but there still seems to be some conventions about them.)

I’ve done a little scripting, but I’ve since forgotten which user directory normally recieves user batch files for pathless-commandline execution. Or while we’re at it, what are all the directories of significance to a user in Ubuntu. The one I just mentioned (is it /home/usr/bin?) plus I know that inetd… is pretty relevant – are there any other superstars (like is the ’start menu’ a directory tree or a file)?

Orient the new Windows guy to the Linux world he lives in. For example, there all these repositories out there, and ubuntu comes with some repositories entered already, but what if I’m supposed to add one?

  4. Chuck – Mnemonics for executables and how to find/remember them

Something to help understand the quirky shorthand names that show up in Linux so often that make app names so hard to remember. I don’t have any idea what you might be able to do about this, but I’ve found it to be difficult.

  5. Chuck – What are dependencies?

I can imagine what is meant by dependencies, but I don’t know for sure.

Printer cups (ipp) setup for roamers:

I could write a article about how to add a network (/printserver) connection with a printer using cups and the default printer manager in Edgy. I was planning on writing it in dutch for my own little ubuntu blog.

It’s rather surprising to see the comments that people just can’t understand the simple english language. You have that you will keep track of reader’s request and there is lot of mixture you will find here in the comments apart from genuine request. BTW is this really helping you out, what you have meant for and what you are actually receiving. ATB

I believe one the key things missing from the Ubuntu community is the ability to get “on demand” assistance. With the Redmond crowd, you might get poor service, but you can always find someone to offer better, customized service..for a fee. This is probably THE significant hurdle for Ubuntu adoption worldwide. I get this question all of the time – how can I get support? Who will answer my questions?

If there were a way to have Cannonical organize or legitimatize a queue of requests and an ecosystem of service-vendors (rated of course by previous customers) for one-off problems or questions, I think this would help. I am thinking of something similar to what Amazon tried with the mechanicalturk.com (artificial artificial intelligence) platform. I think getting Cannonical to help it along is in their interest and would build on their existing efforts.

I am fully aware that the ethos of open source is to have the community respond and I respect that, however, I have seen that this does not always work for the odd-ball question, or the person who needs a particular orientation. I’ve tried the chatrooms, wikis, blogs like this… and all of it is useful, BUT, not enough. BTW – I do find this blog useful. Thanks!!

The New Blogger has enabled migrating blogs across different platforms, such
as WordPress. Anyone can ask a question, and anyone can answer as well –
from serious questions such as how to reduce child
mortality around the world to inane topics such as how to get a booty.

16. การปูสนามหญ้า - September 15, 2014

Studies have shown that patients in hospitals and nursing
homes that have view onto a natural landscape, perhaps one with
a nice green lawn improve their conditions compared to
patients who are not exposed to those same views. Water bills can really be a problem, especially
during the summer months, or for those that live in warm, dry conditions.

For your landscaping needs, artificial grass is surely an excellent option since
it provides superb combination of economy, sturdiness and artistic appeal.
