Ubuntu Billboard

Thanks to Wildbill’s cellphone photo clicking speed, we now can see the first pics of a Ubuntu billboard in the US. Ever.

Boy have I waited for this. I will be so very happy when I walk into Walmart and see free Ubuntu CDs in place of the free AOL cds. Hmm, wait a second - that kind of ubiquity could be obnoxious - but hey! I’ll take a billboard!

The above billboard was spotted near the Ralston exit in Redwood City, USA.

That’s awesome, why isn’t the world full of them?

3. Koen - August 3, 2006

Cool! Where can I get one to put in front of my house? ;-)

4. Trey - August 3, 2006

I don’t think having the CDs in Wal-Mart would be obnoxious because unlike the AOL CD, Ubuntu is actually free with no strings attached.

Good to hear that Ubuntu’s finally got out. Shame that WildBill is an ass, if you use IE to view his page it won’t let you in. Thank you. Not.

I use IE because it is WAY faster than FF. People like WildBill just screw things up. Please, WildBill, If you read this, get rid of that page.

8. Schteve - August 3, 2006

Now the real challenge is getting people to pronounce it correctly…

9. Mjuboy - August 3, 2006

Awesome! I hope they start displaying more soon…

10. nemo - August 3, 2006

If you are going for speed, you should use Opera. Not that I’ve ever noted any significant difference between IE and Firefox on Windows machines.
And either Firefox or Opera would be a far better choice than IE, in terms of unpatched bugs in products with high-level access to your system.

11. FiReFoX RuLeS - August 3, 2006

FF Is Faster than IE!!!

12. MrTrick - August 3, 2006

I guess if all you care about is speed, you’re ok. (I personally think that FF is just as fast if not faster than IE on my Windows machine) I’m guessing you also don’t care about standards compliance either? More people should block non-standards compliant browsers.

13. Bill Gates - August 3, 2006

LAWL Windows > Ubuntu.

Open-Source fails.

14. Nick - August 3, 2006

Tim: Now you know who every non-IE user feels when they try an visit a Microsoft ownd site!!

And lets see how fast IE is when you get a virus/trojan/malware installed just by browsing the web.

exactly. i don’t like it when a browser is unable to display my standard-compliant websites properly. so i block ie too.
right decision!

19. spitfire6006006 - August 3, 2006

thats awesome
and I’ve never seen IE go faster than FF
I mean, I prefer Windows to anything else, and I don’t think Microsoft is this big evil company that everyone seems to think it is, but I still use Linux.s

20. Chris Lees - August 3, 2006

It’s great that there’s an Ubuntu billboard, but most people haven’t heard of Linux.

Is there any word on who is paying for this advertising? Is it a local user group?

21. Scott Perry - August 3, 2006

32. DesireCampbell - August 3, 2006

Soc, you know that Firefox isn’t 100% standards complient either, right? You do know that Firefox still breaks a lot of pages, right? You do know that Firefox, because of all it’s “features” can easily be more bloated, more haddle, slower, and less secure than IE, right?

Or do you just not know anything about Firefox?

33. atrus123 - August 3, 2006

“broken commie garbage with no real support”? Spoken like someone without any understanding of Linux or the outstanding Linux community. In almost every computer I’ve installed Ubuntu and Windows on, Ubuntu recognizes more hardware and configures more drivers. In Windows, you need to actually visit the manufactures website and pull down a bunch of drivers.

34. someBen - August 3, 2006

i was using FF but the network/IT guys did something and now when i launch FF it dies… i have no idea what they did… BASTARDS! good thing they do not know about opera. hehe

41. Josh - August 3, 2006

The right tool for the job. I’m burned out on installing every new Linux distro that comes along. Probably because I’m an old geezer who remembers the days before cd-roms (but not floppies - I’m not that old).

I run Novell, REL, Mandriva, Solaris, FreeBSD, WinXP/2K3, and OS X at home. The right tool for whatever job I’m doing is what I use.

But this should be about the billboard. I don’t like billboards, but whenever I see a geek-oriented billboard, it makes me feel like a symbol that we (us nerds) won. GO NERDS!

42. Tim - August 3, 2006

CB - Thankyou. I’m not bashing FF. I like its tabbing and cool plugins, but it takes so long to launch,

I wipe my system every 2 months to keep it clean and fast, so viruses aren’t normally a matter.

Isn’t the whole point of open source to give people a free choice? WildBill effectively kills this by preventing IE users from getting to his site. Boy, is he going to win a lot of converts… It’s not the way to do it!!

Some time ago I ordered some ubuntu live CDs, it does pretty well on a moderate machine but the X Windows interface is a tad heavy on graphics, the integrated GFX on most PII and PIII boards don’t like it.

43. jon - August 3, 2006

why the hell would your IT guys block FF? I do the opposite here at work…I install FF on all PCs and disable IE.

44. Scott - August 3, 2006

@DesireCampbell

“Firefox isn’t 100% standards complient…”
Yup. I agree, they really need to work on this.

“…can easily be more bloated…”
More bloated than what? You can’t compare FF to IE6, that’s like comparing WinXP to Win98, they are completely different generation products. IE7 unfortunately is a bloated peice of #$%^, far more than FF.

51. Nate - August 3, 2006

@ Rich

Hear, Hear… There must be some marketing geeks that use Ubuntu and could have better gotten the message across - I’m one of them!

Your got to use words like “Free” and “Secure” that people respond to. And play on (some of) their hatred for being tied down with Windows

Billboards are not great venues for this type of advertising anyway - too much to convey - though it could’ve been much better :(

60. Matt - August 3, 2006

Blocking IE or saying it is impossible to code for IE is just an admission that you have no idea what you are talking about. I have seen just as many bugs with FF, Opera, and Safari (Opera especially — it is a horrible, horrible browser to code for). Honestly, I feel IE works more based on how I expect it to (see display:inline) versus how the w3c tells me it should, and more innovation has come from IE (xmlhttprequest, innerHTML) not following standards.

Sweet!

ubuntonista, can we please smack those who are bickering about browsers and changing the subject?

The article is about a billboard, people!

Please have some respect for my friend, ubuntonista. His blog is great and we do not need to start flame wars over browsers.

The billboard is awesome! Personally, I will be truly impressed when I start seeing Ubuntu commercials on TV!

Remember a few years ago when Muhammad Ali was doing IBM Linux commercials? What ever happened to that?

I would love a parody of the Mac OSX guy belittling the Windows (Bill Gates look-a-like) guy. Perhaps, ubuntonista, we need to talk to the Ubuntu PR and marketing team!

65. Bill Gates - August 3, 2006

I have to admit that I’m jealous that both Linux and Mac are able to turn out amazing operating systems at normal intervals. We’re struggling to get a wack OS done within five years.

66. Slick - August 3, 2006

Do YOU know anything about firefox? Iv been using it for close to a year and have NEVER gotten a broken page. It very very rarely crashes and the worst thats happend to me is that i couldnt use some features on sites because they needed activeX control. However, when I use IE, many pages become broken, i have to click that damned activex thing all the time and the no tabbed browsing is extremly anoying (except in ie7). Also firefox loads images faster than IE, making it actualy faster than IE. And when IE crashes, it takes down the whole operating system for gods sake. Talk about unstable.

And btw what browser IS 100% standards complian?

67. Bill R - August 3, 2006

matt if you think Opera 9 is full of bugs or is horrible to code for I think maybe you are misreading the standards.

Perhaps IE works more the way you expect it to because you have been developing for the broken standards in IE for so long and (due to the fact you have to).

IE 7 is a nice improvment over IE6. Firefox is fine too. Opera is quite nice as well.

Generally it is pretty easy to code for all three at the same time. IE6 though- ugh. At one point I really liked IE6 (becuase it was the best available). But I don’t let that cloud my judgement of today’s browsers.

Now, back to the excellent question posted by Bob (#52) - what kind of phone was being used to take that photo? For a camera phone that is a great photo.

68. mutetourette - August 3, 2006

Just so you’all know - this billboard on 101 has REALLY bad karma! I drive by it every day - it used to have Informix throwing rocks at Oracle, then it turned into IBM proclaiming the virtues of DB2 (WTF!)… anyway, I don’t know who’s responsible for the ad but this is a bad geek omen!

74. Scott - August 3, 2006

@ABE

I donno about your suggestions there. As a part-time graphic designer myself(I mostly develop, but I do graphics too) I find GIMP just doesn’t have enough. Photoshop is the best tool I have used. I think Linux really needs to get Photoshop CS and up working perfectly in order to get a large jump of users. I would love to switch to Linux, but I don’t wana do a dual OS. I may throw a linux distro on a laptop in the future, but I need my tools to do my job, and therefore can not switch outside of windows (I hate mac, so it’s not an option by default)

75. Brent - August 3, 2006

@Nate - Like I say, I will truly be impressed, when I start to see Ubuntu commercials on television.

Remember the IBM Linux commercials? Well Canonical is nowhere close to IBM yet, but…

And let’s remember that there is a market for Ubuntu besides just on the geek desktop.

Ubuntu makes a wonderful server! Yes, security and the word “free” is big.

It is the commercial support, for businesses, which is the most relevant issue I believe.

Ubuntu has grown largely because of word of mouth. It will get even bigger with wider hardware support, and OEM installations on in-store computer systems. Look at Linspire, another good distro. I would not be surprised to see companies like Wal-Mart invest in this.

Speaking of investment, this is probably going to be the key issue for advertising. Large companies investing in Ubuntu will make it grow, and become reputable in the IT world.

Speaking of Linspire, I believe that it would be wise for Ubuntu to offer a similar (optional) service to CNR for the desktop. Beginners tend to be intimidated by Linux and are fearful of the unknown. If Ubuntu ever intends to have commercial fervor, on the mainstream desktop, along-side Windows and OSX, it will adopt an even more user-friendly approach.

Yes, it is already easy with apt/synaptic (for geeks at least), but what has made Windows so popular is the ease-of-use in which software is able to be installed.

The idea is, that you want Grandma to be able to use it without help.

CNR is secure, and the idea has already been toyed with, I believe. CNR is also open-source now, for all of you purists out there. And if $20.00/year is expensive to you, then it’s time to ask your boss for a raise!

Ubuntu is going to be huge, there is no doubt about it. I have never seen a Linux distro grow so quickly.

We can be proud to be on the cutting edge!

Every square inch of their retail store costs money. It wouldn’t matter if Ubuntu CD’s came home and –bleep:)– and washed the dishes — they aren’t giving them out for free. Not now. Not ever.

123. Benjamin Tegarden » Blog Archive » Ubuntu Linux Billboard - August 8, 2006

[...] Update (August 7, 2006): This billboard has been widely covered in the tech community, accompanied by a low-quality cameraphone picture and a lot of people who don’t quite know what’s going on. First, the billboard is not a fake or a hoax; it really exists. Second, despite many claims, the billboard is not in Redwood City, California; the marshy land to the east of Highway 101 between Hillsdale and Ralston Avenues is actually part of Belmont, California, although Redwood Shores, Foster City, and San Mateo are all nearby. Third, the billboard was erected the morning of Tuesday, August 1 and remained standing as of today. I’ve not yet encountered a picture of the billboard with a higher resolution or better quality than the one above, although there may be one somewhere. [...]

Nathan :

Go grab yourself a copy of VMWare’s WMWare “SERVER” (free … gotta love that price) and you will never dual-boot again !!!

I am running ALL of my Adobe appliances (including CS2, Dreamveaver, Flash) in a VM and I have never been happier!!
(Sorry GIMP but your GUI is just not user friendly at all!!)

My machine is only an Athlon 650 w/768 MB of ram, and Photoshop/Flash are just as fast as they were in windows before using VMWare server ….

You will want to install the VMWare Tools once your server is installed, as this will correct the mouse responsiveness.

Good Luck!

Update: we just installed Win2000 in a VM on my buddy’s 2.4 Ghz P4 running Ubuntu Dapper Drake (i686), and it literally FLIES !!!

no more dual booting here!!

“broken commie garbage with no real support”

Yep, that pretty much sums it up……. windows that is

I dont think CNR is a good idea, Gnome-app-install is very easy to use and in Edgy (Ubuntu 6.10) it will be even more powerfull.

I think the Ubuntu promotion we’re doing at the moment is ok, but even if Ubuntu is a better OS the world is not ready for it yet.

By which I mean, hardware companies dont give a damn and dont support linux/ open source their drivers and most games companies dont port their games to linux/ open source their engines.

So at the moment TV commercials would be like cutting our nose off to shoot ourselves in the foot. We would be spending waay to much money for people to try it out and dismiss it as bad software for lack of hardware support, which is not our fault.

“Wildbill doesn’t want IE users. I don’t blame him. I’m glad he’s blocking IE users, who are mostly morons anyway. As for those that can’t run anything but IE at work, that’s your fault for working at such a company.”

Wow. I can’t believe just how nieve an individual can be.

If I was running a large network I would try to ensure that no user could download and install any software onto that machine. It makes sense as doing so reduces the chances of an employee downloading a trojan and putting us into a self induced quarantine as we clean up.

Would I therefore be working for ’such a company’?

If there was a single influential individual who said ‘no firefox, people are used to IE and I want them to get what they’re familiar with rather than what might be best, because it’s just simpler to support people when they’re using what they’re used to’.

Would that make it ’such a company?’

So many influences and reasons exist for why Person A has no choice but to use Software B. It may be the best company in the world in all respects other than which browser they force their employees to use.

And in reality, why the hell should an individual care?

It’s a little annoying to use IE at work, but the main reasons for not doing so at home are to do with security… and guess what, at work I’m not responsible for security. I’ll miss the tab browsing, but other than that… whatever.

Limiting a site to a sub-set of users based on some petty stereotyping is basically segregation. It’s prejudice. You are pre-judging people people based on a limited set of knowledge from which you cannot realiably make assumptions.

That puts you in a very delicate position when if comes to any future point on moral discussion.

More flames from America about America………….
I find it sad, poor business practice, and poor media coverage that the only magazines I can find in the major book stores covering Linux operating systems are only from the UK and it’s partners. I know there has to be enough Linux users in America to make it worth printing at lease one Linux magazine and if there is not then it is sad that Americans are so hung-up on Microsoft that they limit their true understanding of total communication.

Wow there are many fanboys here. FF fanboys, IE fanboys,GNU/Linux fanboys, even Windows fanboys!

I personally use Ubuntu + FF. But hey, people have to admit that IE loads just that little bit faster, and it is catching up in terms of Standards Compliance as well. (I am not paid for to say this).

People just grow up and get a life other than flaming IE, MS, Windows, FF, etc. Get away from your computer. For a while.

137. Jay - November 25, 2006

I use Kubuntu + Opera.

Please stop flaming you computer geeks. Take a rest from computing, get a social life. Or alternativly, if it helps, get computer lessons, so that you actully know the differnece between IE+Firefox+Opera.

Two new studies show why some people are more attractive for members of the opposite sex than others.

The University of Florida, Florida State University found that physically attractive people almost instantly attract the attention of the interlocutor, sobesednitsy with them, literally, it is difficult to make eye. This conclusion was reached by a series of psychological experiments, which were determined by the people who believe in sending the first seconds after the acquaintance. Here, a curious feature: single, unmarried experimental preferred to look at the guys, beauty opposite sex, and family, people most often by representatives of their sex.

The authors believe that this feature developed a behavior as a result of the evolution: a man trying to find a decent pair to acquire offspring. If this is resolved, he wondered potential rivals. Detailed information about this magazine will be published Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

In turn, a joint study of the Rockefeller University, Rockefeller University and Duke University, Duke University in North Carolina revealed that women are perceived differently by men smell. During experiments studied the perception of women one of the ingredients of male pheromone-androstenona smell, which is contained in urine or sweat.

The results were startling: women are part of this repugnant odor, and the other part is very attractive, resembling the smell of vanilla, and the third group have not felt any smell. The authors argue that the reason is that the differences in the receptor responsible for the olfactory system, from different people are different.

It has long been proven that mammals (including human) odor is one way of attracting the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. A detailed article about the journal Nature will publish.
