Add a Grub Splash Image March 21, 2006
Posted by Carthik in guides, ubuntu.trackback
The grub slection menu in Ubuntu does not have a splash image in the background. To add your own, install the package “grub-splashimages” by doing a sudo apt-get install grub-splashimages. This will put the splash images in /boot/grub/splashimages.
A screenshot of all the splash images is given below to make selecting one easier:
Now that you have the images, and have chosen one, make a link to the one you like:
$cd /boot/grub
$sudo ln -s splashimages/debsplash.xpm.gz splash.xpm.gz
$sudo update-grub
What we just did was to link /grub/boot/splash.xpm.gz to the debsplash.xpm.gz splash image, and then updated the grub menu.
You know what’s really wierd? One of the splash images has a Gentoo logo in the bottom right corner!!! Also, one splashimage seems broken, the one called fiesta.xpm.gz
Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. Does it work with dapper?
Arun,
Yes, it should work just as well for Dapper.
Thanks so much! I’m using the guitar one right now! One question though- can you add your own? If so, how would one go about doing that?
Chris,
You can create your own, and add them just as you did the ones installed by the package. This gentoo wiki page explains how to create your own.
The .scm file mentioned there is a plugin for GIMP, you can download it and use that. Don’t be confused by the “emerge” commands, you already have gimp etc installed
I did sudo apt-get install grub-splashimages. I didn’t do ln -s since i thought that is needed only if i want a different image. After installing, i rebooted my machine and didn’t get any image. I got the same old text menu only. Any idea?
Arun, you have to link to some one of the the images. Basically what you are doing is to create a link to the image of your choice. This is not optional
oh! ok. I thought it links an image by default.

Not everyone is so good at commands! We all grew up in Windows (except for some people, *hint* *hint*) and are spoiled with its GUI. Be nice to newbies. I am sure you used to be a newbie as well…
I totally agree with inky! Some people are just like that, pay no attention!
CLI (Command Line Interface) Guru’s like to show their knowledge. Ask them something simple and they will walk you through a slew of commands that a click here and a click there would have suffice via GUI (Graphical User Interface). Although in *nix, their are some things that only on CLI can do. Not everyone is a hardcore computer user, some use it for entertainment.

I did this and made the guitar my grub splash image and it worked, now i want to change it to an image from this page: http://www.queervisions.com/arch/2007/04/9_grub_splash_i.html
but my boot drive is 95% full and I’m afraid to add anything else to it, when i go to delete other splash images I get an error message that says this: “/boot/grub/…_14.xpm.gz” cannot be deleted because you do not have permissions to modify its parent folder.” How can i delete these splash images? And please tell me anything else I should know. You can email me or post it here. My email is Jrbonini@comcast.net.

Hello, very nice site, keep up good job!
Admin good, very good.
I have a problem, the only way to have the entire picture shown is if I go into the boot menu by disabling the count down or hitting escape during the count down.
During the countdown the picture is shown only behind the line that is counting down and the rest of the screen is black.
Is there a way to have the entire image down during the countdown or the grub menu shown while it does the countdown?
Hi.
Good design, who make it?

I’ve blogged about creating my own splash image for my Eee PC
I followed your instructions to the letter and succeeded to install the image you picked, but when I tried to change it to ‘guitar’ this is what happens:
sudo ln -s splashimages/guitar.xpm.gz splash.xpm.gz
[sudo] password for xxxxxxxx:
ln: creating symbolic link `splash.xpm.gz’ to `splashimages/guitar.xpm.gz’: File exists
And then the previous splash remains. Why?
